Gluten Free Product Review: The Honest Company

By Calvin Eaton @glutenfreechef5

The-Honest-Company-LogoI was somewhat familiar with the Jessica Alba founded Honest Company and their mission to bring eco-friendly, non-toxic and sustainable products to everyday families. So I was eager to receive their sampling of products to try for myself.

Honest is all about allergen friendly non-toxic personal use products including shampoo, lotion, body wash, reusable diapers, and toothpaste. Frustrated with the lack of transparency in so called “natural” products already on the market Alba and co-founder Christopher Gavigan set out to create their own line of safe, affordable, and natural personal use products. The Honest brand is targeted to families with young children who have skin sensitivities and other allergies that rule out the standard bath and body products that rule the marketplace.

I am cautious with the type of deodorants, creams, and lotions that I use since heavily scented products with harsh fumes and fragrances stir me into a flare, make me nauseous, and break out my skin. My sensitivity to fumes and scents are partly due to my autoimmune illnesses which have increased my allegies and sensitivities. At the same time I need products that will hold up to my active lifestyle of running, swimming, cycling and the like.

Surprisingly Honest’s line of lotions, shampoos, and body wash were more than suitable for my heavy use. When they say natural they mean it. Each product contains a laundry of all natural ingredients that I can actually pronounce. Vanilla oil, coconut oil, and tangerine oil are just a few of the ingredients in their shampoo + body wash. I appreciate the transparency of the Honest brand being clear and direct about the ingredients that are used in their products. Many people like myself are just as concerned with what they put on their body as they are with what they put in their body. Not to mention the skin is our largest organ and we need to protect it. My brother who also suffers from extreme sensitivities and allergies was equally impressed with the line. After one day of trial he immediately ordered a set of their lotion, shampoo and body wash.

In a nutshell if you are looking for sustainable products made by an environmentally responsible company then The Honest brand is for you.
