From her first breath of fresh air beyond the pit, it has never been enough for Beth Moore to be free. This best-selling author and Bible teacher who has opened the riches of Scripture to millions longs for you to be free as well—to know the Love and Presence that are better than life and the power of God’s Word that defies all darkness. Beth’s journey out of the pit has been heart-rending. But from this and the poetic expressions of Psalm 40 has come the reward: a new song for her soul, given by her Saviour and offered to you in Get Out of That Pit—friend to friend. This is Beth’s most stirring message yet of the sheer hope, utter deliverance, and complete and glorious freedom of God: I waited patiently for the Lord He turned to me and heard my cry He lifted me out of the slimy pit He set my feet on a rock He put a new song in my mouth It is a story, a song—a salvation—that you can know too.

Every now and again, I have an opportunity to review a book authored by someone I would read whether I was a blogger or not.  Today’s book, Get Out of That Pit: Straight Talk about God’s Deliverance by Beth Moore is one of those.  I LOVE Beth Moore and I have done a few of her women’s studies at my church and have really learned a lot and enjoyed them! To be honest, it’s hard to go wrong when it comes to reading something by Ms. Moore.  She is always refreshingly honest, rooted deeply in scripture and very applicable to the issues she writes about.

In this book Beth Moore takes readers on a journey of self examination to bring them from a state of despair to state of deliverance. As usual, Ms. Moore doesn’t sugar coat anything here. She encourages readers to face their sin and seek repentance for those sins.  She also requires that we find forgiveness for those who we feel have wronged us. As she teaches us, by following these steps we can break the cycle of destructive living such as codependent relationships and the feeling of hopelessness, to name a couple.

Beth Moore writes with lots of humor and style to get her points across too.  She introduces God in a totally understandable way and explores how Christians and non-Christians alike experience “bad” seasons in life. The book is also a road map for anyone trying to find their way and begin to appreciate the sunshine on any given day.  Ms. Moore goes into a very methodical and detailed description of living in pits of every kind and how to finally get out of those pits, move to higher ground and find real living. She really sums it up perfectly and provides constructive, Godly advice for getting out of any pit.

The back of the book contains review questions so that the book could be used as a group study or you could study on your own.  The questions will allow readers to dig deep into their lives and see their behaviors that need to change in order to move closer in their relationships with God and to set us free. She makes it clear that God loves us regardless of our past and how He wants the best for each of us. Ms. Moore provides the Biblical connection to confirm God’s wishes for our best.

The book is filled with interesting anecdotes from Ms. Moore’s own life and not all of them are happy or funny, but all are poignant and appropriate. If things don’t seem “quite right” in your life, you need to read this book – it is refeshing, challenging and God-centered, and can help you too!
