Food Review: Turnip & Enjoy, Gt Western Road, Glasgow

Turn up to turnip

Turnip might not be your go-to comfort food, or the ingredient that's going to win you any awards but we did spot it twice on the menu here, and so, the place formally known as simply "Enjoy" has been prefixed with Scotland's national root vegetable - maybe this will be the next craze in the evolution of food trends?

We'd never made it in before the name change but a number of people suggested it to us not long afterwards but it still took us until late in 2016 to er, turn up. But did we enjoy..?

Decor

Warm exposed brickwork with pretty cornicing, wooden tables and seating with large windows for lots of light.

Menu

There was a tasting menu - 5 courses for £35 plus matching wines for an additional £25 but we just went for the market menu (lunch: 2 courses for £13.95 / 3 for £16.95, dinner: £16.95 / £19.95).

Food

Starters

We both love Stornoway black pudding so had high hopes for this but the black pudding was over-cooked for our liking, crunchy on both sides. The chorizo crumble reminded Mr Foodie of popping candy, well, without the pop(!). It was a bit unusual and not the texture We'd usually want with black pudding and egg - which was under-done so a bit slimy. This should have been amazing but the cooking times didn't do it justice.

This was better - light, fresh, dainty, artfully presented and not a turnip in sight! There were no off-putting fishy aromas and the black gnocchi (which was new to us) was happily devoured by Mrs Foodie despite not being a huge fan of the little Italian dumplings.

Mains

Perfect wholesome winter scran - succulent chicken, a confit lolly, shredded veg and toasted corn on, or is it now off the cob?

Mmm big chunky chips cooked in duck fat...

Another dish of winter perfection. Very comforting tender beef, creamy mash with a little nippy tang from the horseradish and mooli.

Desserts

A light refreshing panacotta, with honeyed ice-cream, sweet fruit and crunch.

Like the previous dessert we had a mix of ice-cream, fruit and crunch, resulting in a pleasant end to our meals.

Conclusion

This is a busy wee restaurant doing most things right, a number of people came in without reservations who had to be turned away. There was a bit of a delay in getting our bill as there were only 2 waiting staff who were busy with other customers but overall, despite the disappointing black pudding, this was one of our best meals in 2016, especially for the money so we're keen to go back again and try the tasting menu.

We had wine too which was very nice. Service was friendly and well-paced, with a relaxed non-pretentious or stuffy atmosphere. Music was also to our liking and the toilets were very clean and looked after.

If you're stuck in a January rut(abaga) you could do far worse than dine here.

Swede dreams everyone!

TL,DR
+ Amazing food for the price
+ Good wine too
+ Chilled music
+ Spotless toilets
+ Handy for Kelvinbridge underground

- black pudding overcooked, egg slightly underdone
- very busy so difficult getting attention of staff
