Nicholson’s chain pub The Drum and Monkey The Drum & Monkey is in an old 1920’s bank building and is known as somewhere with good beer, but does this translate to good food as well? Myself and the Colonel went in to check it out.

The interior is like old style bar, comfortable, quiet for a lunch time with tv showing news. The bar generally has four ales on rotation.

With a good lunch deal, I picked Scampi and Chips with a soft drink for £7:50 and the Colonel an Ultimate Burger at £11:50. We didn’t have long to wait for our order and snapping progressed.

Advertised as “plump wholetail scampi, served with skin on chips and tartare sauce” jeez I’d hate to see the skinny scampi! Decidedly average portion, dry lemon, small scampi and the chips we OK, saved by tomato sauce. Let’s hope the Colonel did better.
Ultimate Burger, The Drum and Monkey, Glasgow
At £11:50 it at least came with chips! “choose from either two succulent beef patties or two grilled chicken breasts, topped with smoked back bacon, mature cheddar, hand battered onion rings and bbq sauce” The burger was a good size with tasty cheese and bacon, however… the patties…extremely processed and mushy. The type of burger that needs all the toppings to give it some oomph.
