Food: Errol’s Hot Pizza, Victoria Road, Glasgow

By Emma @glasgowfoodie

With the likes of Paesano, Mozza and Baffo offering up gourmet pizza in the city centre and west end, and Phillies and 800 degrees opening south of the river, the newly-opened Errol's Hot Pizza on Victoria Road has filled the void at what was for years, the Bungalow Cafe on Victoria Road.

With chef's from Finnieston's Alchemilla, Errol's has already gained a following despite there being precious little info about the place on the internet.

Although the look and feel of this tiny dive-bar restaurant says Brooklyn or Berlin to me, the football scarves and wall art suggest a link to Naples (a good pizza sign) or Frankfurt (maybe not such a good sign?)!

Our visit was serendipitous, we were in the area for ice cream and saw people passing with pizza boxes so realised that it had recently opened for the evening. Our plans for ice cream shelved until the next day, we ventured inside for a seat.

Food

Takeaway business was brisk, so there was a little wait for those sitting in but that meant time to not only "enjoy" the music but the artwork as well.

The puttanesca was crying out to be eaten, olives, anchovies, capers - Mrs Foodie was in savoury heaven at the sound of this.

A thin and crisp base, ideal for folding and eating, no need for cutlery here. The toppings stayed in place and 👍 for the amount of topping. Not as wet or chewy as a Naples Pizza you would find in Paesano, Baffo or Mozza, but a damm fine pizza.

The chilli in the puttanesca doesn't overpower it, just a wee warming heat with just enough anchovies to give it a salty tang without the grimace when eating.

Music: AC DC, Dio, Judas Priest, Kiss, Manowar, Ted Nugent, ZZ Top. We are fans of none of these bands but at least it's better than listening to "O Sole Mio" or modern pop nonsense and I did hum along to "Whipping Post" which does have a certain fondness because of the Zappa cover and background story.

Verdict

👍

Excellent stuff, thin and crispy New York style pizza. If you are in the area, a visit is a must.

TL;DR

+ makes us feel like we're on holiday!
+ good pizza
+ crappy artwork!

- hair metal music
