Chris Graham reports for The Telegraph, Aug. 27, 2016, that in a gym in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, are 34 caskets side by side.

Beside one casket sits a small blond cocker spaniel sits, devoted to the end, unable to leave his master even in death.

Little is known of the dog’s master except that he came from Accumoli, one of the communities that bore the brunt of Wednesday’s devastating quake that rocked central Italy, which took the lives of at least 281 people and left thousands homeless. The quake was so strong that the town of Accumoli sank by nearly 8 inches (20 cm), according to Italy’s geological institute.

The dog’s master and the 33 other caskets are buried today — declared by the Italian government as a day of national mourning.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has declared a state of emergency and authorized 50 million euros for immediate quake relief.
