Fabulous Filmic Fashion Friday: THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT
Getting back on the fashion track with a wonderful gem and an impressive title: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). This cult movie that came to me out of nowhere (how come I had never ever heard of it?), features some of the coolest and most inventive outfits I've ever seen. Nothing much you would wear in public - or wear at all - but still, that's what haute-couture's all about, isn't it?
The film revolves around three transsexuals who go on a roadtrip through Australia's outback, sequins and wigs included, which gave the designers the opportunity of their lifetime. While there are some more casual outfits in the film too - no, they don't walk around in flip-flop dresses all the time - I've decided to focus on the coolest and more extravagant costumes here.

These are the first really unusual outfits we see in the film, and my God was I stunned when I saw them. A dress out of flip flops, plus a matching handbag!? Awesome.
Opera-singing on the roof of a car

Another surprising and luscious scene. First of all, I've been loving opera ever since I first saw Match Point. And secondly, I'm a sucker for drama. Maybe that's why I love this movie so much.
Practicing in the desert

Another thing I love about this movie is the way it works with contrasts. And what would be a better contrast than three drag queens (what many people call "unnatural") in the middle of the Australian desert? A feast for the eye, definitely.
By the way: I was simply not able to forget this when I watched The Hobbit yesterday. All I could think of when I saw Elrond aka Hugo Weaving, was this image. Yeah, it was kind of annoying.
"I will survive" Aborigine style

So hilarious! In a good way, I mean. The way the Aborigines start dancing and singing along, I mean... it's all just love and peace. (And I love the wigs).
Flowers (?)

... is what I'm guessing the theme of these outfits to be. Again, so hilarious and so brave too. The choreographies and mimics are also perfect. And I had to buy the song on iTunes.
I wanna see you peacock

Wow, Björk and her swan dress are nothing against this. Just look at their expressions, their make up, their bodies - it's all one really creative organism. Sounds weird, I know.
Demons

This is one of my favourites. I especially love the make up - you can't see it here, but it really looks like they have demons' skin. And the eyebrows to the right. Man, I've got to try this out some day.
Marie Antoinette with a twist

Kitschy, funny, awesome. I almost love this just as much as the outfits from Coppola's movie.

A beautiful end to a beautiful film. Again: perfect.
A huge applause to the costume designers Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel, who sadly don't enjoy much fame at all. They'd deserve it - if only for this film.
