Everything You Need to Know About Matching Your Home To Your Life

By Lamamma @LAmamma1

Opening a double page spread of an interior design magazine it can be easy to fall under the impression that our homes should be shrines to perfection, and that our lives should be dedicated to keeping them that way. While, living in a tidy space is desirable being a slave to your home, or having a home that doesn’t work for you and your family, isn’t. In fact, it really should be the other way around. Our home should fit in with, and be practical for our lifestyle. Read on to find out more.

Cream carpets

Who in their right mind ever thought cream carpets were a practical idea? Yep, they make the room seem bigger, and they go with everything, but the brutal truth of the matter is that they will be a nightmare to keep clean. That is why it’s much better to go for a different neutral color such as gray, or camel. As these won’t show stains as badly and therefore should minimize the work for you in keeping them looking presentable.

Hot water

Sometimes it’s the really basic things in our home that aren’t working for us, things like the availability of hot water. After all,  what is the use of going to work for a long shift, and then coming home, only to be able to shower in ice cold water, because all the hot has been used up?

Then pick one for you home and install it.  It’s that easy, so don’t make yourself suffer the indignities of freezing water anymore.

Mirrored surfaces

Hmmm, the practicality of mirrored surfaces is a best questionable. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a few decorative mirrors around the home, to check out your reflection in and to make things seem more spacious. But mirrored furniture? Really?

Surely the only people that buy this are ones that thoroughly enjoy constantly polishing things. Otherwise, they are bound to have smudged finger marks all over them all of the time. That is why in my book, mirrored furniture just isn’t practical. So ditch it and go for something else that better matches your lifestyle.

The organization game

Lastly, with the popularity of tidying methods like KonMari, it seems like all home should be impeccably organized and contain only clear sideboards and work surfaces. Now, there is a practical benefit to this is in that it’s more hygienic, and you can always find what you want.

However, there is also a downside, and this is where you have to be careful. You need to watch out that your tidying and organizing is balanced. Where you are doing it for a tangible benefit, and not just searching for perfection. As this is impractical and a good example of trying to fit your life to your home, and not the other way round.
