Eyes are the windows to the soul… But, how can you peek into someone’s soul or your own soul, if you are distracted by those dark circles under the eyes?

Needless to say, dark circles are a major cause of concern for many women because they make you look twice your age. If getting enough sleep and living stress free is not working for you, you should check out the other reasons responsible for dark circles.

The Family Gift

Dark circles come as a family gift for a few people because heredity takes over for them. If you consider yourself lucky because your parents didn’t pass on those dark rings to you, you’d still have dark circles because of the blood vessels running throughout the body. The skin under our eyes is very delicate and the blood vessels running under show through the skin in a slightly bluish-green color.

Ageing is yet another reason which makes dark circles look more prominent. The skin under your eyes which is already quite thin becomes thinner as you age, making the veins inside more visible.

Medical Reasons

Not only this, capillary leakage is equally a culprit. Sometimes, blood leaks from the capillaries and the enzymes are released to clean them up. They break the haemoglobin down, to prevent it from floating anywhere else, resulting in a blue-black color.  And this is the process which gives birth to your worries – the dark circles!

Dark circles also signal iron deficiency. Deficiency in iron is a sign of anemia which specifies that not enough oxygen is reaching the blood vessels. Not only this but poor nutrition, smoking, drinking or consumption of excessive caffeine, sleep deprivation, increased exposure to the sun, allergies, hormonal changes and dehydration are also responsible for dark circles.

Reason it out from its colour!

You can figure out the reason for your dark circles if you are able to determine its color. Blue circles are a result of blood pooling under your eyes. Brown circles are a result of genetics, exposure to sun or incessant rubbing of the eye.

So, hate those rings around your eyes? Here’s what you can do to lighten them.

  • Consume food rich in vitamin C, as it helps strengthen the immune system and the blood vessels. This will prevent them from rupturing frequently, leading to fewer dark circles.
  • Consume food rich in vitamin K and zinc, which helps heal the capillaries. Broccoli, spinach, cabbage, lentils, chickpeas, soybean, canola oil, yogurt, okra, and asparagus are particularly rich in vitamin K.
  • Foods rich in vitamin A, iron, and proteins are quite effective against dark circles. Chicken, tuna, carrots, lean beef, and eggs are a few examples.
  • Eat foods that flush water out of the body, such as cucumbers, watermelon, and celery. Avoid excessive consumption of salt in your diet.
  • Eat food rich in omega-3 fats such as salmon. These fats keep the skin healthy and moist.
  • Have a diet rich in fruits and vegetables as they are full of fiber.
  • Use cold cucumber slices or tea bags on your eyes every day for 15 minutes. You can also put a wet cloth on your eyes for a few minutes every day.
  • You can use an extra pillow to keep your head a tad high. This will prevent the pooling of fluids near your eyes.
  • Make sure to get enough sleep and always maintain a proper sleep schedule.
  • Apply a high SPF sunscreen whenever you are going outside.
