The current rumor going around is that the big bad that Peter Capaldi will face in his first (and maybe only?) season as the Doctor will in fact be The Master.
The rumor comes from Sylvester McCoy’s appearance at the recent Newcastle Film and Comic Con as the 7th Doctor himself said that not only does he know who is going to be playing the new Master, but that “he’ll be very scary”. More specifically, Brett Devenish, resident reviewer for Doctor Who Spoilers tweeted about a quick meeting he had with McCoy:

Now the only information regarding this comes in the form of the above tweet, the rapid spread of the rumor. With no disrespect for McCoy, his knowledge of the casting is questionable, as something like that, one would think, would be a more heavily protect secret than to let someone carelessly leak out bits of information. Then again, he could have simply been toying with fans, or referencing rumors that have been online for a while, most notably that the Master would be played by Tywin Lannister himself Charles Dance. (which if true, could easily pull off the “scary” Master)
No doubt, with filming currently underway, if there is an announcement regarding the Master, we’ll eventually hear something official from the BBC, as a casting like that would likely be hard to keep under wraps. Until then though, just take this information with a huge pinch of salt.
