Doctor Who as a Japanese Dating Sim Game? What? Trust Me, It’s Funny

Posted on the 24 August 2014 by Weminoredinfilm.com @WeMinoredInFilm

A couple of weeks ago, I came across an adorable fan-made opening credits sequence for a hypothetical animated series version of Doctor Who done in the style of Disney’s Gravity Falls.  It left me with a huge smile on my face, and I had to write it about on the site.

Well, someone out there noticed my write-up.  A representative from the YouTube Channel Mashed contacted me to draw my attention to one of their Doctor Who videos:

Unlucky in love? Can’t find that special someone? Why struggle being the person no one wants to date when you could be… THIRTEEN people?  Introducing… Romantic Time Traveller BoyfriendXD Plus! The wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey, time-travelling dating simulator!  Use jelly babies, cricket, menacing eyebrows and your favorite Time Lord quotes to woo companions through all of time and space! Unsuccessful? Don’t worry! You can always put on a ‘brave face’…We hope you enjoy our latest clip by the FiveWhoFans and iamprikle to celebrate the return of Doctor Who on 23rd August!
I’ve never actually played an online dating simulator before.  So, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, and I’ll admit that on first view I didn’t actually completely understand what I was looking at it; I just knew it was really, really funny.  The basic idea is that it’s a commercial for a faux-Japanese (anime!) Doctor Who video game, kind of like a Doctor Who TV show dating game where when the Doctor dies he regenerates and the girls are his companions in the show.  You should check it out.  It’ll only cost you two minutes:
  • David Tennant is the “Sad Eyeballs Thin Boyfriend”
  • Jon Pertwee is “Science Dandy Fighting Boyfriend”
  • Tom Baker is “Adorable Eyeballs Fedorable Boyfriend”
Peter Davison is “Beige Batball Vegetable Boyfriend”
  • Colin Baker is “Many Colour Anger Carrot Drink Boyfriend”
  • Matt Smith is “Wacky Hair Chin Boyfriend”
  • Peter Capaldi is “Super Sweary Handsome Anger Boyfriend”
Every single one of those is absolutely spot-on, and those who know their Who history must definitely get a kick out of all the knowing references, such as the hilarious swipe thrown in at Colin Baker’s regrettable companion Mel (“Christ, you’re loud!”).  Capping it off with Capaldi’s “I’m not your boyfriend” line from the season 8 premiere was either a hilarious guess on their part, or they broke down and watched the leaked version of the episode/read the leaked script.  Either way, with so much of “Deep Breath” centered around squashing the idea of the Doctor as a lovable boyfriend this video about a Doctor Who dating game comes off even funnier now.
