Ditch the Frizz for Good With These Hair Tips for Curly Hair

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

Whether it is the crazy summer heat or an adventurous hike in the woods, curly hair poses great challenges when it comes to figuring out how to manage it. You may love the summer, but hate what heat and humidity do to your curly hair. When it comes to natural curls, keeping them tidy, fresh and vibrant is challenging. Heat and humidity are ultimate killers and makes it difficult (or impossible) to maintain healthy and neat locks.

What exactly happens to your curls under unpleasant circumstances? Finer curls fall flat creating a dry frizz while thicker curls form double ringlets matching the Chia Pet look. To stand resolute in fighting this devastating hair malfunction, you must learn about your hair texture. Look in the mirror to see if your hair strands stick out? If yes, they lack moisture. Different hair textures require different challenges. The texture of your hair determines which treatment is best for it. For example, fine hair needs a bit of spray to hold it down while coarse hair needs to eliminate the frizz. Once you break down what actually works for you, you'll be able to get the products that ensure your hair struggles are kept to the minimum.

For fine curls protection:

  • If you're planning a day out to the beach or a pool, wear your hair in a braid to keep your hair closely tied together. A braid, in this case, works best as it interlocks the strands of your hair. This ensures you end up with soft beachy hair once your hair dries, instead of frizzy hair that's dry and rough.
  • During the drying process, use a cotton shirt to dry the hair instead of a towel. The fibers in the towel can cause frizz. Using a cotton jersey t-shirt is a better idea as it will be less harsh on the hair.
  • Use a fine-hold hairspray. This will help your natural curls stay in place.

For medium hair protection:

  • After exiting the pool, use a wide-tooth comb to untangle knots as brushing too meticulously will brush out the natural curls creating an unattractive frizz. If you're particularly concerned about knots, brush your hair thoroughly in the night before taking a shower in the morning. Use conditioners to ensure your hair doesn't tangle and form knots as much in the first place.
  • If you want to look good throughout the day, use hot rollers. These add volume to your natural curls.
  • Do not use drying products on your hair, try keeping your hair as soft as possible to maintain soft-looking curls. Consume a lot of vitamins, especially vitamin A and other healthy foods, and use essential oils a few times a week. Also, incorporate a shampoo that uses fewer chemicals and is mostly made from natural ingredients.

Protection for thick hair curls:

  • Thick hair has a natural advantage and requires just a little bit of grooming to look extremely attractive. The number one rule is to stick to natural products at all times. Try coconut oil or Moroccan oil to keep ringlets firm and bouncy. Air dry your hair and maintain a time difference of at least an hour or two before going out of the house (as properly dried hair is less likely to develop frizz).
  • When it comes to haircuts and styles, only trust professionals to do the job even if it means just getting a trim. A good stylist can also use flat irons to straighten curly tresses temporarily.
If you're really concerned about keeping your curls intact amid humidity and heat, here are some dos and don'ts that should you regularly adhere to:

Dos

  • Treat your hair with natural products on a regular basis. This includes home remedies and massages.
  • Apply products to wet hair so they are readily absorbed into the hair.
  • Use softening products that eliminate dryness. Dryness is the main culprit that causes frizziness.

Don'ts

  • Never apply shampoo directly to your scalp. Start with shampooing your hair from the bottom to the top.
  • Do not brush your hair. This would add even more weight on your hair which will result in the curls going flat. In fact, it is generally damaging to comb any type of hair when wet. Curls look best when they set naturally.
  • Do not use a towel, but rather a cotton t-shirt to dry your hair; squeeze the water out, don't rub. Friction from normal towels creates frizz.
  • If you're looking to straighten your hair, you can use different heating appliances. The flat irons and straighteners are best in this regard, but they also cause damage to the hair. One of the natural, yet less efficient, ways to straighten hair is to keep them wrapped while damp and brush them softly once they're dry. Increase your intake of vitamins and natural foods to produce more silkiness in your hair.
