THIS September at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Errol Orbida aka Chill presents a catalog of photos that documents random moments of life in the streets of Manila. Orbida, who is better known for his work as a street/graffiti artist, returns to the medium that initiated his practice.
In the exhibit Random Index, a slideshow of more or less three thousand photos is projected on a wall that can be viewed from the outside, giving the people access to Orbida's perspective. The daily evening projection on the façade of the CCP's Main Theater Building is installed via a mirror projection system in the 4th floor atrium, adjacent to Orbida's exhibition of photos printed on both paper and wood. The sizeable number of projected images is a play on how the viewer can randomly select images either by familiarity or how they relate and react to it. The wall is essential for it acts like a public space, echoing the artist's background in street art.
Orbida is also interested in presenting other similarities between his two artistic practices such as finding the perfect spot or the perfect moment. Random Index also plays with the idea of reflection and the process of image making in photography. The artist reflects on random moments, the camera reflects light, the light is reflected by the projector, the mirror reflects the image to the public. The entire process ideally ends with arming the public with questions to be reflected upon, giving more value and meaning to an image which was selected randomly both by the artist and the viewer.

Random Index will open on 21 September, 6pm at the CCP's Pasilyo Victorio Edades (4F Hallway Gallery). Orbida will give an artist's talk on 19 October, Wednesday, 4pm, at the CCP's MKP Hall. Exhibit viewing hours are from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-6pm.
