By Wonder

WHITTIER, CA — On November 8, 2012, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) named the City of Whittier as the “Most Business-Friendly City in Los Angeles County” for cities with a population of 60,000 and over. “After having been named a Finalist in 2009, 2010, and 2011, it feels great to finally win!” said Mayor Owen Newcomer.

“The City values its businesses and we appreciate that they have chosen to invest in Whittier. Through our economic development efforts, we want to help them continue to be successful, and we continually seek new ways to help assist them.”

Mayor Newcomer further said, “at the end of the day, their success is everyone’s success — the businesses, community and City alike. Winning the Most Business-Friendly City Award is a fantastic recognition of our efforts to help our business
community.”

The LAEDC selects winners based on the following criteria:
– Demonstrated commitment to economic development as a priority;
– Excellence in programs and services designed to facilitate business entry, expansion, and retention;
– Economic development activity over the past three years;
– Competitive business tax rates and fee structures;
– Availability of economic incentives; and
– Effective communication with and about business clients.

The City of Whittier is committed to proactive economic development and promotes a business-friendly environment to ensure Whittier remains economically viable. The City’s Economic Development Program is designed to encourage business growth and private investment. Some examples of why Whittier was selected as Most Business-Friendly City include:

– A successful Local Economic Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan developed in 2009;
– Great partnerships with business and workforce organizations such as the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce, Whittier Uptown Association, the Regional Occupational Program and the California Manufacturing Technology Consulting group;
– A dedicated staff person to serve as an ombudsperson to help businesses navigate the city’s licensing and permitting process; and
– A Film Friendly Ordinance.

“Being business-friendly is a philosophy embraced throughout City Hall. We value our business community and continue to look for new and innovative ways to assist them,” said Mayor Pro Tem Bob Henderson.
