The books that appeal most to my boys are those that make them laugh. The sillier, the better! So, we all loved the new book, Duck in the Fridge, by Jeff Mack. The title alone makes kids want to pick it up. What could be sillier than a duck in the refrigerator? In the book, a young boy asks his father why he always reads Mother Goose stories to him at bedtime. In response, the father launches into a story that amazes him! When he was a little boy, the father found a duck in his refrigerator one day. That duck was joined by more ducks, and soon they took over the house! The boy tried to scare them away by ordering a box of sheep, but they all just created one big party! Dogs and cows failed to clear out the ducks and sheep, and soon the boys’ home was overtaken by animals. I won’t spoil the surprise by explaining how the boy resolves his problem, but I’m sure you’ve figured out that it has something to do with Mother Goose!The fun and colorful illustrations by author Jeff Mack are also filled with jokes and puns that will delight children. When the ducks order pizza, the boy asks, “Who’s going to pay for all of this?” One duck responds, “Just put it on my bill”! (Get it?) The sight of the animals enjoying pizza, playing cards and having a party will have kids in giggles. And parents can guide them in coming up with their own ideas for getting rid of the critters in the boy’s house. Who will come up with the silliest solution?
