On this episode of The CerebralMix we continue our journey through Oz with Dorothy as she encounters her entourage of travel companions. In the first episode, she encountered the Scarecrow. In this episode she is joined by the Tin Woodsman and the Cowardly Lion.
The manner in which each character is portrayed as being flawed is very interesting. The Scarecrow doesn’t have a brain, the Tin Woodsman needs a heart, and the Cowardly Lion needs courage. So what does Dorothy need? Well, the most one can say is that she wants to go home, she isn’t portrayed as having any specific flaws, just that she is out of place in the land of Oz.
More so, she is seen as a special character: she killed the Wicked With of The East. She has done something that no one else has been able to do. And, in fact, she has actually changed the balance of things in the land of Oz.
I have found this idea a bit interesting given the state of writing for children in our modern times. I can’t help think of books like the Lemony Snickett ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ which actually play up the characters positive aspects, instead of portrayed them as flawed. It was truly a different time and manner of thinking when this classic novel was written, I wonder if it were adapted as a movie today if it would be the same as the original?
