In an industry often criticized for promoting unrealistic standards, a new generation of beauty professionals is redefining what confidence, self-expression, and representation truly look like. Among them is Deja Nizhoni, a Navajo entrepreneur, licensed aesthetician, and model who is building a name for herself through her growing beauty brand, Nudae Beauty.
Born and raised on the Navajo Nation and in Flagstaff, Arizona, Nizhoni’s journey into the beauty industry was anything but conventional.
Growing up on the Rez came with both deep cultural pride and unique challenges. Like many Native youth in Arizona, she witnessed firsthand the social issues that can impact reservation communities, including limited opportunities, economic hardships, and the pressures that often make it difficult for young people to envision careers outside of what is familiar. While the Navajo Nation is rich in tradition, culture, and resilience, pursuing a path in an industry like beauty and aesthetics is not always viewed as a conventional career choice.
As a student-athlete, she dedicated much of her early life to volleyball, competing throughout high school and college. Like many athletes, she envisioned a future built around competition and performance. However, after suffering an injury that changed the trajectory of her athletic career, she found herself searching for a new path.
That search ultimately led her to an unexpected place: the beauty industry.
Before launching her own business, Nizhoni worked at Wicked AZ Coffee, a staple of Flagstaff’s coffee scene, where she spent time reflecting on what she truly wanted for her future. Rather than allowing setbacks to define her, she began investing in herself, pursuing professional education and certifications that would eventually become the foundation of her career.
Choosing that path required stepping outside of expectations and embracing something different. For many Native entrepreneurs, breaking away from cultural norms or pursuing careers that are not widely represented within their communities can be intimidating. Nizhoni understood that success would require taking risks, believing in herself, and creating opportunities where few examples existed before her.
Today, Nizhoni is a licensed aesthetician and holds certifications in both spray tanning, ombré brow tattoo artistry and many other beauty-based accomplishments. Her work is centered around helping clients feel confident in their own skin while enhancing their natural features rather than masking them.
“Beauty isn’t about becoming someone else,” she explains. “It’s about feeling comfortable and confident as yourself.”
That philosophy has become a guiding principle behind Nudae Beauty, her Arizona-based beauty studio and brand.
Recently opening her own studio in Chandler, Arizona, Nizhoni has continued expanding her services while building a loyal clientele throughout the Valley. Her approach combines technical expertise with a personalized experience that prioritizes confidence, self-care, and authenticity.
Beyond her work in aesthetics, Nizhoni has also established herself as a model, collaborating with photographers and brands throughout the Southwest. She has worked alongside Native-owned fashion company OXDX Clothing and has appeared in projects captured by professional photographer KMJ Photo Creations.
As a Navajo woman, representation remains an important part of her story.
Historically, Native American voices have been underrepresented across both the beauty and fashion industries. Nizhoni hopes that by pursuing her dreams openly and authentically, she can help inspire other young Native women to believe that success is possible in industries where they may not always see themselves represented.
She also hopes her journey demonstrates that it is possible to honor your culture while forging your own path. By building a business in an industry that has not traditionally been a common career route within many reservation communities, she is helping expand what success can look like for the next generation.
Rather than fitting into traditional beauty standards, she believes the industry should evolve to celebrate individuality, culture, and personal confidence.
Through Nudae Beauty, she is doing exactly that.
While her business continues to grow, Nizhoni remains focused on helping clients feel empowered, creating meaningful connections within her community, and showing that beauty can be both professional and deeply personal.
For Nizhoni, this journey has never been about following trends.
It’s about creating space for people to feel seen, confident, and comfortable in who they are.
