Box Office Predictions: ‘The Fault In’ The ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’?

Posted on the 06 June 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

1) The Fault In Our Stars- 45M Weekend, 45M Total

Box Office Nostradamus(i?)(eses?) have been finding this weekend hard to predict, because of the runaway potential of The Fault In Our Stars, which has dominated social media tracking, and seems poised to take a dominant 1st place this weekend. It’s surprising, because it is (at heart) a young adult drama, and those don’t typically open north of 30 million, let alone 40M. I’m betting in Stars, which will have solid numbers from late night Thursday (thanks to a promotion called The Night Before Our Stars. This has proven to be one of those “gotta see it” films, and Shailene Woodley’s Divergent did really well in theatres, poising her for her second straight hit.

2) Maleficent- 34M Weekend, 128M Total

Maleficent will see a large decline, and unless Edge Of Tomorrow breaks through, it should only slip to #2. Audiences gave it a great cinemascore, so word of mouth should be solid, and neither new release really targets the family audience. Families will still have to choose Maleficent for the under 10 crowd.

3) Edge Of Tomorrow- 30M Weekend, 30M Total

Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi actioner has been getting really great reviews, but are people worn out of Tom Cruise after Oblivion? The soul sucking sci-fi actioner only managed about 80M domestically, not putting Cruise on strong footing for Edge. However, really strong reviews have suggested that Edge is worth watching, and with strong word of mouth, Edge might pick up speed over the weekend, and remain a viable option throughout the summer. At least, that’s what the studio is hoping.

4) X-Men: Days Of Future Past- 17M Weekend, 192M Total

X-Men should hopefully level off a bit this weekend, and not drop over 50% again. Close… but hopefully not over, considering it does have good reviews, and an A cinemascore.

5) A Million Ways To Die In The West- 10M Weekend, 33M Total

A hard drop, but neither new opener is a comedy, so over 50% isn’t likely.

6) Godzilla- 7M Weekend, 186M Total

7) Blended- 5M Weekend, 37M Total

8) Neighbors- 4.5M Weekend, 137M Total
REVIEW: Neighbors

9) Amazing Spider-Man 2- 2M Weekend, 196M Total

10) Million Dollar Arm- 2M Weekend, 31M Total
