There were two things that interested me about this book, Skinny Life: The Secret to Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Fitness, and about Crystal Hansen herself: (1) The book cover that said “physical, emotional and spiritual fitness” and (2) her husband, Mark Victor Hansen, is a co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books. It caused me to be drawn to the book to start out, but once I was reading, it was the book that kept my attention.

Crystal encourages us to keep focused on our entire bodies – not just physically, but our minds and our emotions, along with our bodies. While she does encourage us to throw out our bathroom scales and find out the root of our “problems”. I especially appreciate that the book isn’t just for people trying to be “skinny”. Crystal provides a logical, practical and faith-based approach and inspires us to create respect for ourselves and our bodies. She reminds us that if we can change our thoughts and our patterns, we can create a happy and healthy life.

Skinny Life® is definitely not one of those fad diet books either. Crystal offers an alternate approach: a form of fitness that combines physical and emotional health with spiritual health, specifically that of a Christian mindset, which is rare to see these days. Crystal is honest and asks us thought-provoking questions to help prompt us to change our lifestyle. She writes in a very easy style so that it is understood without all that diet-fitness-mumbo-jumbo too.  One of the neat things about Skinny Life® is how every chapter ends with a testimonial of someone who has gone through the Skinny Life® program. It also provides affirmations for us to use by speaking words of wisdom to our own beings. The book is so thoughtful and comprehensive – it puts all the pieces of the weight puzzle together so you can see your mind-set and your eating habits.

Crystal shares her own journey with making poor eating choices and unhealthy relationship with food. While she wasn’t terribly overweight, she did engage in some poor eating and then punish herself afterward. She began to see food as the enemy until she had her own epiphany. Then, instead of being drawn to eating things unhealthy and low in nutrition – things that would rob her of her “best self” – she naturally started seeking healthier foods. I love how Crystal describes the THIEF foods (foods to avoid) and the SAINT foods (food to eat).

This book is divided into three parts: the first four chapters are covered as “The Truth about Weight Issues”.  The next three chapters are “A New Way of Looking at Weight and You” and the last five chapters are “Life As The New You”.

Crystal provides a summary near the end of the book reminding us that life is a journey of thousands of ups and downs. While it is difficult to do something different in our lives when we are uninformed, unprepared or uninvolved, it is Crystal’s hope that Skinny Life® will inform, prepare and involve us in those choices. A “Skinny Life Bottom Line” is this: “Only one person can set the standard for how you will live your life and take care of yourself: you.” While simply stating the obvious, it is also a great reminder to us.

I know for me, I do focus too much on the scale number because I weigh in every week (and sometimes more). Crystal Hansen confirms my thinking that a God centered life and positive thinking is the key to weight loss.  Her views on owning our body, our choices, and our life path were all refreshing. Our weight is our choice. Our fitness level is our choice. Our daily walk with God and focus on His goodness is our choice. We are body mind and spirit and all three must be addressed.
