Interview with Elle Klass

   Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special Storm is very much an ordinary woman. She somewhat drifts through her early life until she finds her true love while gambling the last of her savings. Finding him wakes her up inside and she discovers what love really is as they make a life for themselves and their child.
   What’s it about? 

As Snow Falls is a story about love and life. Her feelings and thoughts about life, her family, and friends are fully displayed to the reader from the novels first person narrative.

   What genre are your books?

My books are varying genres. I consider As Snow Falls to be a fictional memoir. The Baby Girl Series is more of a new adult fiction.

   What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?

Computers. I always had the creativity but lacked the desire to use traditional pencil and paper to write a story. I got my first computer in college and wrote mostly term papers but once I graduated it was on and the novel writing began. It took me several years to publish it, mostly because I didn’t like the options and was too busy raising my daughters.

   Where do your ideas come from?

Creativity. my stories come from an idea and then the characters take over and the story goes places I never fully imagined.

   What is the hardest thing about writing?

Writing a story is the easy part, editing the difficult part.It’s such a meticulous process and I’m somewhat OCD so I go over and over the story and the edits from various editors hundreds of times before I have to finally tell myself to stop.

   What are your thoughts on writing a book series.

As Snow Falls is not a series book but I do have a short story series out, Baby Girl. I have loved writing the Baby Girl series. The story starts out when Cleo is 12 and abandoned by her mother and has to survive on her own. Book 3 which will be released by the middle of July she is a young adult in her early 20′s and hot on the trail of discovering who she really is.

   Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors.

I read all the time, anymore I mostly read Indie authors, currently I’m reading A Psilent Place below by Marcha Fox. It’s a great sci-fi/ paranormal action novella. My favorite all time author is V.C. Andrews. I still have my worn out paperbacks I don’t think I can ever part with.

   Tell us about the cover/s and how it/they came about.

My daughter drew the cover for As Snow Falls. She drew two different versions which can both be seen in the book, the cover version and the inside version. She is quite an artist and I’ve had a lot of compliments on her talent.

   Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

I think the cover definitely plays a part for some people in whether they buy a book or not. Other people like to look at the reviews. I am a review person because I like to hear others opinions and not just the good ones. i read the best reviews and the worst then I buy the book.

   How are you publishing your books ?
(*e.g. Indie, traditional or both) I am an indie publisher and love it. I have full say in everything related to my books. I am learning more and more about the business each day as well. The toughest part is promotion. I knew nothing when I first published As Snow Falls, now I know quite a bit.I have spent the past several months observing other authors, mingling with other authors and I’m finally get the hang of it and starting to enjoy it.
   What would you say are the main advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing against being published or the other way around? I’m not sure I know the answer to that or if there is an advantage. I think it’s an authors choice. As an indie author I have full say over my books, covers, content, where I publish, everything. Traditionally published authors don’t have as much say unless they find a really great publisher. I also collect all my royalties which at this point go back into advertising. Indie publishing is a business and like any business takes a while to build a customer base. I have found when it comes to promotion traditional publishers don’t lend much of a hand so these authors find themselves out there in the promoting world every bit as much as indies do.
   Would you do your publicity or do you use a PR agency? I work with a marketing co-op that yes once again I hooked up with on Linkedin. Bonnie Marlewski is our master chief and has worked in the publishing business for decades. She has a lot of experience which I am learning from. At times I even have advice for her.

There is of course my author support group as I call them. We support and market each other. Watch my social media and friend me on Facebook to get invited to our events. We just had one that ended yesterday it was a blast and I met more authors and fans. I love both!

   Do you have any advice for other authors on how to market their books?

My best advice for any author whether traditional or indie is to observe before publishing and work out a marketing plan. Subscribe to author mailing lists and blogs, get on social media sites and join book/blogger/reading groups, join in Facebook author events and check out various advertising websites. Start networking.

   What part of your writing time do you devote to marketing your book?

Some days all is do is market in some form or another. Other days all I do is write and edit. Its about 50/50 and beginning to pay off. I also have a full time job which takes up forty hours a week and I have found so do most other indie authors and even some traditionally published authors I know.

   What do you do to get book reviews?

I offer ARC’s of my books, network with people on Linkedin, review swaps and dumb luck sometimes.

   How successful has your quest for reviews been so far? It was tough at first because I knew nothing about the business. I posted a review for Memoirs of an Ordinary Girl: The middle-ish Ages by Terri Klaes Harper on my blog and shared on Linkedin. I had a ton of authors who wanted to do review swaps. Author John R. Dizon, master of political thrillers, was one of the first, has been very helpful and we have become big fans of each other’s work. He’s also turned me onto other avenues of promotion and various other indie authors who have turned out to be a wonderful support group.
   Any tips on what to do and what not to do?

What not to do: Don’t tweet your own book every hour on the hour. I watched others do this and was greatly annoyed by it. What to do is find various advertising channels that will market your book for you then tweet or share on social media. There is nothing wrong with self promotion just don’t over do it so you turn fans away.

   Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

I love the beach, margaritas, and corvettes. I have two beautiful daughters. My youngest will be on the cover of Baby Girl 3 which debuts mid July. My oldest is the illustrator for As Snow Falls.
