Best Destinations to Visit in New Zealand

By Nico @atravellersday

New Zealand often features at the top of many travellers must see destinations and it’s not hard to understand why. With snow tipped mountain peaks, luscious forests, stretches of coastline and green as far as the eye can see, New Zealand has some of the world’s most breathtaking and magnificent landscapes. So, apart from Auckland and the capital Wellington, which locations are must see destinations?

Milford Sound

The incredible landscape here has changed little since the Ice Age, when it was formed by glaciers. Mountains rise dramatically from the water with deep valleys, fjords and waterfalls. Milford is also home to the Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory, a hidden floating experience. This is a must see location for nature and wildlife photographers.

Bay Islands

Only a few hours drive north of Auckland, the Bay Islands offer some of New Zealand’s most picturesque coastline. This is a great location for water sports or wildlife enthusiasts. Go scuba diving and discover the wealth of marine life that resides in the clear blue waters, or take a boat trip to catch a glimpse of the area’s dolphins and whales.

Queenstown nz

Queenstown

This destination has something to offer all year round. In the summer months you can go river rafting, take a leisurely boat cruise, hike through the area’s lake district, or adrenaline junkies can enjoy the view with a sky dive. In the winter, Queenstown attracts skiers from all over the world. For those looking for a more laid back holiday, the area also boasts spas, wine tours, art galleries and museums. Whatever you do, make sure you experience the beauty of Queenstown at night with a cable car ride.

Wiaheke Island

This island offers the perfect retreat to unwind and relax. Although only a thirty minute ferry journey from Auckland, you will feel like you have traveled a world away. Wiaheke is full of vineyards, so it’s a paradise for wine enthusiasts. It also boasts fine dining, crystal clear waters perfect for scuba diving, as well as beautiful beaches and scenery.

hobbiton nz

Waitomo

Formed from limestone millions of years ago, this area is home to New Zealand’s famous Glowworm Caves, aptly named as the caves come alight with the worm’s luminescent glow. You can book a boat ride and view this incredible spectacle for yourself. An hour drive away you can find Hobbiton, where the sets from The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies reside.
