An important note about the story I tell today in my blog posting linked below: even as Catholic institutions in the 1990s knew of the growing crisis with priests abusing minors — though lay Catholics were kept in the dark about that crisis — /1https://t.co/0RsfjnM13X— 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖 𝙳. some Catholic institutions in that very same period began moving against LGBTQ employees, following Ratzinger's purge of gay Catholics with his infamous 1986 "pastoral" letter.
In other words, a move was already afoot to pin blame for the abuse on gay folks at that time. /2— 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖 𝙳. 𝙻𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚜𝚎𝚢 (@wdlindsy) February 22, 2019

LGBTQ Catholics working in Catholic institutions were targeted, many of them living in discreet monogamous relationships — at the very time the same institutions were often KNOWINGLY sheltering clerics who had abused male minors, while no one was told they were doing this. /3— 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖 𝙳.
