Oliver and Olivia had a good run, but it looks like their time is over – according to the Office of National Statistics, Harry and Amelia were the two most popular boy and girl baby names in England and Wales 2011.

While these were the overwhelmingly most popular names in England and Wales, the ONS also noted that they account for only 14 percent of all the names registered in 2011. And there are also regional variations, as well: Although Harry was the most popular boys’ name in much of England, Daniel took the top spot in London and Oliver remained king in Wales. Among girls’ names, Lily was the most popular in Wales and several regions of England, but Isabella was Londoners’ pick. Notably, for people who care about this sort of statistic, Muhammed and Mohammed were both in the top 100 most popular boys’ names, but not in the top ten.

Of course, with the London 2012 Olympic Games having been such a raging success, in particular for Team GB, next year will probably see Mo and Jessica topping the lists.
