Story: Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret starts when Margaret (Fortson) and her family Barbara (McAdams) and Herb (Safdie) move to the suburbs. She finds herself befriended by Nancy (Graham) and joins a secret club. Meanwhile, she looks to learn more about religion, as her mother is catholic, and her father is Jewish.
That isn’t her only problem, as growing up is happening fast. Margaret faces difficult life decisions at such a young age, as she explores religion and adolescence.
Verdict on Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret
Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret is a coming-of-age comedy drama. It follows an 11-year-old girl as she focuses on early adolescence and starts asking the bigger question about religion. She experiences changes on a fast level and must deal with the fact even more is going to change going forward.
This is a charming coming-of-age tale using the 70s era setting to show a different era of growing up. It manages to show the struggles she faces and shows how she looks to learn more. I imagine many people would have gone through the same difficult times that are natural in change. While the religious discussions prove that people need to look at how they use their religion for good. The performances are wonderful with Abby Ryder Fortson giving a star-making performance.
