Rae Wynter Scholarship Essay

Hi, my name is Rae Wynter and I am a first-year student at the University of Maryland and I major in chemistry, hoping to graduate in May of 2022. With a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, I hope to become a Forensic Scientist and work for the FBI since they are constantly working to keep America safe and are conveniently located in an area close to mine. By achieving these goals, I will not only be able to support my family but also society since I will be working in a field that closely works with putting dangerous criminals away.

Throughout my life, my parents have taught me the importance of being selfless and caring towards those in need. That is why since the age of 11, my dad has taken me to volunteer at a rehabilitation center for mothers and their children during the Christmas time. I continued volunteering there up until the age of 17, so I learned how important it is to not take anything for granted and to be appreciative for all of the things I have now. It also taught me to give anything I can to those in need, since they are unable to regularly provide for themselves. Another aspect of my life that has helped me have so many important life lessons and become the person I am today is through playing softball. I have been playing softball for the majority of my life and have been able to grow up with people I can now call family. Softball has taught me to push myself through any obstacles I may face in life and that it is okay to fail at something, but it's how you come back from that failure that is important. It also taught me the skills needed to work with a team to complete a common goal and that no matter how good you may be, you can't do everything by yourself. There are so many more things in my life that have shaped me to be the person I am today, but those two experiences have been my biggest influences yet.

My most meaningful achievement so far in life is being able to enroll at the University of Maryland. To many, this may not seem like a great accomplishment but to me, it was one of my hardest goals to achieve. In high school, I was a pretty average student and did not have any hope of being able to attend a prestigious university. On January 26, 2018, I received a conditional acceptance into Maryland. The only condition was that I would have to be a part of the Academic Achievement Program and take an intensive 6-week program during the Summer. At the time, I believed that it would only be a couple classes a day and would still have the time and freedom to enjoy my Summer like normal. After the first day of classes, I saw that I was very much wrong. My day started at 8 in the morning until 7 at night, Monday through Friday so unlike my peers, I was not able to have a regular Summer. On top of that, I had numerous assignments and projects due every day so I felt that I was constantly doing school work and rarely got a break. After 6 weeks, unlike some of the people in the program, I was admitted as a full-time student into the University of Maryland. This achievement was not important to me just because it allowed me to enroll into to a prestigious university, but also because I saw how self-motivated and determined I was and I now know that I can do anything if I work hard enough for it. This achievement relates to my field of study because I know how hard it is to obtain a degree in Chemistry, and even graduate with honors, but as I've seen in the past, I know I am capable enough to complete any goal I aspire to, no matter the difficulty.
