Last month Nintendo announced that they will re-release their Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) but in a mini-format. Now Sega apparently also wants a peace of the cake of the retro-hype and is bringing their Genesis back too. Here is what we know about the new (old) games consoles.
Nintendo’s NES
Pokemon was already relived so why not bring back another success from the past? The Mini-NES will be a small version of the orgininal NES and hit stores on November 11, 2016. It comes with a classic controller, a USB cable and a HDMI cable. And the price is right too: The machine with one controller will cost $59,99 U.S. dollars. The price of a second controller is still unclear but a German source says that it will cost $10 U.S. dollars and that you can also use a Wii controller to play the system. But the most exciting detail is that the console will include 30 pre-loaded games. Some of them will be multiplayer games so you can play them with friends. Here is the list of all games it comes with:
- Balloon Fight™
- BUBBLE BOBBLE
- Castlevania™
- Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™
- Donkey Kong™
- Donkey Kong Jr. ™
- DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
- Dr. Mario™
- Excitebike™
- FINAL FANTASY®
- Galaga™
- GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®
- GRADIUS™

Nintendo also announced that the console “can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii console. Simply connect it to a Wii Remote controller to make the experience that much more authentic. Players needn’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress either as each game has multiple suspend points, allowing them to start where they left off at a later time, no passwords needed.”
Sega’s MegaDrive/Genesis
Sega apparently wants to match Nintendo’s NES and also announced a mini-console to celebrate Sonic The Hedgehog’s 25th birthday. The new system will be a portable console with even more games than Nintendo’s NES. The “Sega MegaDrive/Genesis Ultimate Retro Games Handheld 25th Sonic the Hedgehog Anniversary Edition” (*taking a breath*) will cost $65 U.S. dollars and will be released in October 2016. It comes with a built-in rechargeable battery, a USB cable and a SD card slot for unlimited expansion, so you can download more games online. Like I already spoilered, will the compact games console also have way more games – 80! Here is the the complete list of games included with the handheld:

I personally am more excited about Nintendo’s NES because you can play it on a big TV screen and also with more than one player. On the other hand (no pun intended) you can play with Sega’s handheld on the way like on a train or generally outside. But I guess with the one or the other every nostalgic retro fan will get his or her’s money’s worth.
