Afternoon Tea at St Mary's Inn

Hello Freckles Afternoon Tea St Marys Inn MorpethA couple of weeks ago I visited St Mary's Inn to try out their afternoon tea. I'd seen a few photos from other bloggers and naturally, was quite excited about the desserts. I popped my sat nav on and off I went, taking my Mam with me for a little treat.Hello Freckles St Marys Inn Afternoon Tea Pub Hello Freckles St Marys Inn Afternoon Tea Pub Decor Hello Freckles St Marys Inn Afternoon Tea Morpeth
It didn't take too long to get there, possibly since we'd been to the Metro Centre beforehand (it was a unexpectedly busy day for blogging). The pub is through a newly built housing estate in part of the converted old St Mary's hospital in Stannington. It's quite rural hidden away in the countryside along some wonderful country roads which I quite enjoyed driving along in the sun, but it's only around 20 minutes drive from Newcastle.
When you walk into the pub you'll see it's got a lovely family friendly atmosphere (dogs are welcome in the main bar) with a large rooms for guests to enjoy food and a drink, a more private room hidden around the corner and a lovely terrace area at the back, as well as plenty of benches at the front perfect for soaking up the sun.Hello Freckles Afternoon Tea St Marys Inn Morpeth TeapotHello Freckles Afternoon Tea St Marys Inn Morpeth  Hello Freckles St Marys Inn Afternoon Tea Desserts
We'd booked in for around 3pm and although we arrived a little early, the staff happily showed us to a table and left us to browse the menus. We opted for the classic afternoon tea and strawberries and cream tea for me, earl gray with lemon for my Mam. When our teapots arrived (nicely coordinated, red for me, gray for earl gray - coincidence or not it was a nice touch) we were also given an extra jug of hot water to top up our tea when we needed.

Afternoon Tea at St Mary's Inn is quite the feast, with a range of sandwiches - salt beef and mustard, egg and cress, cheese and pickle (my favourite) and prawn with marie rose sauce , three mini scones - spiced fruit and blackberry, plain and a cheddar one each and a tray of desserts. The scones were light and fluffy which was good, so we still had room to tackle the desserts; apple and almond tart, rhubarb pavlova, lime and vanilla macaron and chocolate brownies. We did end up taking a few desserts home in a little box one of the staff provided, so don't be afraid to ask if you need to take your macarons home, or even the scones!

If you're around Morpeth or perhaps having a day trip up to Alnwick or Bamburgh, I'd recommend popping to St Mary's Inn for afternoon tea just down the road. If afternoon tea isn't your thing, they've got a full menu too and a Sunday Roast available, though I can't comment on what they're like. I guess I'll have to arrange another visit!

Afternoon Tea is served at St Mary's Inn 12-5pm Monday to Saturday and from 3pm on Sundays for £14.95 p.p. For more details see their website.
