Acer and Asustek are to launch affordable Android Tablets for the Asian market

Acer and Asustek Computer is planning to produce 7-inch Android tablets for sale at the US$149 mark (about RM450). The move is much welcome by Google in the hope that such production will boost global market share for Android tablets.

According to Digitimes, Acer will be planning to launch 7-inch tablets powered by processors which were developed by MediaTek and to be sold at the low-end market for US$90-149 (RM270-RM450) mostly for the Asian market and south America. An initial shipment of about 500,000 to 600,000 units are already prepared for the first quarter of the year.

Asustek will also produce low cost 7-inch tablets (US$149) for sale in Taiwan, China, India and South America at the end of January and a targeted quantity of five million units for 2013 has already been arranged. To keep the tablet affordable, Asustek has to minimise production costs and adopted cheaper processors developed by VIA Technologies and touch panels and any other vital components supplied by second-tier manufacturers.

It is expected that the move by Acer and Asustek Computers will encourage other companies to follow suit thus contributing more affordable Android tablet to the market. Android tablets are expected to account for over 50% of all tablets sold in 2013. On the other hand the launch of the low-priced Android tablets will also bring “downbeat blow” to white-box (unbranded) tablet manufacturers.

I really welcome this wise move by both Asus and Acer, and when the tablets finally reach our stores, I will be among the first to get one, just imagine the price, under RM500!
