Hanging Grove Township School in Rensselaer, Indiana
At one point, the 1922 built Hanging Grove School in Rensselaer, Indiana was on the 2009 list for endangered Jasper County landmarks. Tragically, this one seems to have gone beyond saving. After the roof goes, as at this old Indiana school it certainly has, nature takes over quickly.Once containing grades one through eight in three classrooms, those days are long gone. Where once the gym, restrooms, and storage were now contains the floor above. There is one remaining, unbroken window in the entire building. I used a camera with a great zoom function. I highly recommend that you do the same and keep your distance.
Small trees and other greenery are growing at various points inside the abandoned Indiana school. No side looks better than the other. All the way around the large building, no matter where you look, it is a crumbling mess. It is a heart breaking sight. It is also slated for demolition unless historic preservationists can figure out a way to save the building from the wrecking ball. Bricks have been rescued from the site to at least preserve a small piece of the history.
Though several other identical schools once existed in the area, it is my understanding that this is the last one standing. At least for now. Click on the images to see a larger version.
