A Sweet Coastal Taranaki Wedding (with Some Scottish Flavour) by Aimee Kelly Photography

By Jax

OK so I might be bias but as my son's name is William (we call him Bill), the grooms full name is William McWilliam (I know, cool right!) but they call him Bill, and I also have some Scottish heritage (oh and who doesn't love a man in a kilt!?), you could pretty much say this wedding had my heart from the get go!

There is something about gorgeous couple Lucy & William that brings back all that excitement for me about why I got married. Their sweet story, his super down to earth sneaky proposal, and their gorgeous wedding photos tell of nothing but love, and photographer Aimee Kelly captured the day perfectly! Enjoy xox

We first met in our first year of University at Massey in Palmerston North as we were in the same Halls of Residence. We stayed really good friends right through our time at Uni, but we didn't actually get together until our 4th year, where it all kicked off at one of our good friend Simons 21st! (Thanks Simon!).

On the 25th April 2015. We were travelling back to Taranaki for my Dads birthday and Willie said he had sold something fishing related on Trademe (not surprising!) - and so we had to meet the buyer at Oakura Beach. Turns out the box of fishing gear was actually a picnic basket filled with all my favorite things! Willie proposed on the beach where we had our first official date about 6 years before, it was a complete surprise, and obviously I said yes!

Relaxed and Simple. I spent hours on Pinterest where most of my ideas came from, and probably hours on the phone to my Mum too! We didn't want anything too fussy or over the top, and wanted to use the beautiful Coastal venue as a feature. We kept the colors in our flowers and venue decorations simple by sticking with yellows, whites and green. We also loved the kilts that the guys wore as it was something a little bit different but also really special for Willie with his Scottish heritage.

We saved by...

My Mum and Dad helped with lots of the DIY venue decorations. Dad made the Blackboards that we used for the welcome sign and the menu and drinks list, and Mum made the bunting and spray-painted the cans that we used for our table numbers. We also hunted around for most things before buying them. We also saved by using the wedding cake as the dessert (which was so delicious!) instead of having a separate dessert provided by the caterer, and Mum made lots of Rocky Road Slice to go with it too.

My dress and the kilt hire. Both totally worth it though!

Our advice to engaged couples...

We set the date for our wedding not long after we got engaged which was great as it gave us lots of time to research and decide what we wanted to do, without feeling rushed. It also meant we could book in our preferred vendors without having to worry about them already being booked out.
