A Conversation with Curlfriend Monique of 'Kinky Curly Coily Queens'
Meet our fellow Curlfriend, Monique Spence of the blog Kinky Curly Coily Queens. Monique has been natural for six years. She began her natural hair journey by transitioning for a year before finally getting rid of her relaxed ends. It's been six years since she made the cut and for her, there's no looking back.
Hi Monique! Please, introduce yourself and tell us what made you decide to start wearing your natural texture?
Hi, my name is Monique Spence. I'm from the beautiful island of Jamaica. My friends would call me the hair freak because I am always doing something hair related when I am not hitting the books. I enjoy learning about God, listening to music and singing. I am 21 years old this June, and I am a nursing student. I've been natural for almost 6 years now. My dad did not like the permed hair and thought doing this only made me lose all the length I had.
A Conversation with Curlfriend Monique of 'Kinky Curly Coily Queens' How would you describe your particular hair texture & how did your friends and family respond to seeing your natural texture? My hair is very thick especially when it needs to be washed. It's kinky, curly and coily - very multi-textured. All it needs is some patience. I had no problem with my family members accepting the decision, my friends were skeptical but now they are in love with it.
How has the journey been for you this far, and what are your hair goals? My hair journey is a bittersweet one. There are moments when I want to wear a twist-out, wash n' go, braid-out... you name it but I am just lazy and those are so time-consuming to maintain throughout the week so I put them in twists and then I get bored by twists and I want a twist-out. As for my goals, I am slowly getting there, as I said before patience is all this hair needs.
What are some of your go-to natural hair styles and your staple hair care products? My go-to styles are puffs whether it be high, low or centered, buns and chunky twists. My staple products are Lottabody Moisture Me Curl & Style Milk because it smells so good, it moisturizes my hair and it defines my curls.
Tresemme Flawless Curls Conditioner because it's a thick product, it coats my strands well and keep them moisturized.

One n' Only Argan Oil Moisture Repair Conditioner because deep conditions my hair so well and my hair is so soft and shiny when I use it and I can't forget my Coconut Oil. Being natural has made me more confident in myself. I initially did {have regrets} when my dad told me to transition, but as I began to research more about natural hair care I began to love it and there was no going back. You've been natural for six years now. What tips or advice would you give to anyone thinking about transitioning or who may be newly natural? I would encourage all transitioning naturals to not give up despite not being able to handle the two textures and don't forget to deep condition to strengthen that natural hair.
Who is your current natural hair crush? My current hair crush is Naptural85.
