7 of the Hottest Natural Hair Trends that You Need to Try This Summer
The journey of acceptance and love of natural hair may not always be love at first sight. And that's okay. We all get bored with our hair at some point and as women we are always looking to enhance and reinvent our styles. There's no difference when it comes to our hair. Just in case you've fallen in a natural hair rut this summer, here are 7 natural hair trends you can try that will not only give you a fresh and funky new look this summer, they can also make you fall in love with your kinks, curls and coils all over again.

1. JUMBO BOX BRAIDS

Jumbo box braids were all the hype back in the 90s, especially after Poetic Justice hit the screen. Everyone wanted to rock Janet Jackson's urban sexy style. Box braids have always been gorgeous and unlike some braided styles, they don't take that long to install. The braids themselves are pretty big and the hair is parted in large sections so there aren't many braids to install. Not only are jumbo box braids one of the dopest braided styles, in my opinion, they are also a quick protective styling option that will allow your hair to grow without being manipulated on a regular basis.

Hair chalking is a fairly new trend that lets you temporarily experiment with hair colors without the commitment or potential damage that permanent hair dyes can cause. Unlike some semi-permanent hair dyes, I've found that hair chalk can be pretty pigmented and can show up on almost any hair color. There is no need to bleach your hair prior to using the hair chalk and once you're ready to move on to a new color, you just shampoo it out and move on.

3. A FEARLESS TAPERED OR UNDERCUT DESIGN

Tapered and undercut designs are all the rage this year, and rightfully so! What better way to show your bold, irresistible personality than with a fierce new hair cut. For an innovative, fresh and funky hairstyle the tapered cut is definitely the way to go. For something a little less dramatic, try going for an undercut at the nape of your neck instead of the sides, so that you can wear your hair down to cover the design when needed.

Grey hair has always been a sign of ageless beauty. For many years, gray hair was a sign of aging and many women would try to hide their gray hairs by coloring it with hair dye. Some women would even be embarrassed for having gray hair. But, times have changed and gray hair is something that young girls are beautifully imitating and killing it while doing so!  Rocking gray kinks, curls or coils this summer is something you may not be able to resist.

5. BIG CHOP (again)

Maybe you're tired of styling your hair everyday, or you work out a lot or perhaps you just want a new look. Either way, going for a second big chop isn't that bad of an idea. It will give you a new look and a fresh start. Especially if you have hair that may be suffering from heat damage or color damage. Summer is the perfect time to rock a fresh TWA and think of how liberating it is to cut your hair. I've been on the fence about another hair cut but because I've suffered from some heat damage from flat-ironing my hair, a big chop is definitely in the cards for me in the near future.

6. GET FAUX LOCS INSTALLED

Locs are another gorgeous style that is admired by many, but many are intimidated by the style because it comes with a commitment. Once your hair has locked and matured, you pretty much have to cut your hair to remove them otherwise you would spend weeks trying to untangle each individual locked hair strand. With faux locs, you get to enjoy the beauty of this gorgeous style without the constraint of committing to locking your hair.

7. GO BLONDE OR GO HOME

Beautiful blonde heads of natural curls, kinks and coils are on a rise this year and despite popular belief, it's being done without causing excessive damage to the hair. There is no need to be fearful of going lighter or coloring your natural hair blonde as long as it is done correctly and the hair is properly maintained after being colored. I always recommend having it professionally colored when going for a lighter color and avoid using one of those at-home coloring kits if you can.
