Volcanoes Safaris - the leading luxury lodge company in Rwanda and Uganda - are excited to announce the official launch of the Kyambura Gorge Ecotourism Project.
Since 2009, the Kyambura Gorge Ecotourism Project has been safeguarding the Kyambura Gorge ecosystem. The strategic assembling of four adjoining sites next to the Gorge over the last ten years seeks to ensure that the gorge is safeguarded for the long term.
After the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Volcanoes Safaris and their non-profit organisation Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT) are the single largest stakeholder in the Gorge ecosystem. Without the support from Volcanoes Safaris and VSPT, the gorge would be under severe threat and the chimpanzees would not have survived.
The aim of the Kyambura Gorge Ecotourism project is to safeguard a very fragile ecosystem through the protection of the land around the Gorge and connecting the Kyambura Gorge Lodge (one of Volcanoes Safaris' luxury four lodges which has been newly refurbished) with targeted conservation and community activities. This project is the first of its kind in the area and, as such, an example of pioneering work conducted by VPST.
The beautiful Kyambura Gorge, also known as the 'Valley of the Apes', is located in the far eastern corner of Queen Elizabeth National Park in south western Uganda. Approximately 1 km across - at its broadest point and about 100 meters deep, this gorge is actually drained by River Kyambura. The impressive landscape of the Gorge is home to a rich wildlife bio-diversity that comprises of primates (such as chimpanzees, red tailed monkeys, and black and white colobus monkeys), wild animals and over 100 species of birds.
