20 YEARS AGO: The Boo Radleys - The Old Newsstand at Hamilton SquareA selection from one of 1998's best and most underrated albums, 'Kingsize' by The Boo Radleys.
A symphonic indie rock album peppered with interesting electronics and thrashy, fuzzy guitar, it still sounds stunning 20 years later.
Unlike anything the band had ever recorded, 'The Old Newsstand At Hamilton Square' captures the senses with its dusty funk loop, fantastic basslines and bittersweet memories. I always thought of it as having a mood not unlike James Bond soundtracks, when it was in fact influenced by Lalo Schifrin's music for Bullit. Like much of Kingsize, it possesses a deep sadness that is brought to the fore by the vulnerability and emotional power of singer Sice's voice.
