Mike Tomlin played football at William and Mary as a Wide Receiver/Tight End. He has a school record of 17 career touchdown receptions. In 1994, he was selected to the All-Yankee Conference second team.

Mike Tomlin coached the wide receivers at Virginia Military Institute in 1995. In 1996, he was hired by University of Memphis as a graduate assistant and coached Special teams and the defensive backs. In 1997, Arkansas State University hired him as the wide receiver coach and the following year promoted him to defensive backs coach. The University of Cincinnati hired him in 1999 to coach their defensive backs.

Mike Tomlin first NFL position was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their defensive backs coach from 2001 to 2005.
