Unlike the rest of us college students who cope with the stresses of life by sloppily consuming pizza at 3AM, twenty-two year old Trevor Powers has discovered a different (and far less fattening) approach to combating his demons. Starting one year ago, after failing to find fulfillment in numerous other bands, Powers embarked on a solo musical endeavor called Youth Lagoon. With a voice that softly hovers over piano chords and ringing synth beats, he creates a romantic sound that somehow also manages to conjure up dark images through deeply nostalgic lyrics.
The band’s new music video for the song “Montana” appropriately reflects this lyrical sense of longing through a somber depiction of families meandering their way through the twists and turns of life. Youth Lagoon’s debut album, The Year of Hibernation, is set to drop this September 27 via Fat Possum Records. One can only hope that it is filled with a few more of those glistening tunes.
Youth Lagoon is currently on tour and heading to Mercury Lounge in New York City this upcoming Monday.
