...otherwise known as Le Pain Quotidien, or my new favorite place. As luck would have it, if you throw a dart at a map, you can probably find one. In the US or abroad, they are springing up all over the place, and with good reason.
Aside from the casual environment ~ raw knotted wood communal or private tables, gorgeous loaves of fresh baked breads and friendly service (not to mention a loaf cleverly sliced to hold your menus) ~ this place is perfect for vegans, vegetarians and anyone looking for a hearty, healthy meal.
Today my friend Monica and I shared a bowl of vegan mushroom soup (topped only by the vegan asparagus soup I had last time) served with two large pieces of sourdough. Then we each enjoyed the seaweed salad with firm tofu and miso dressing. How can you beat the textures and flavors in that dish, and for only $6.75! I challenge you to find somewhere in NYC with such great options at such good prices.
Other choices (both botanical and vegan as indicated on their menu by a cute little carrot icon) include mesclun or arugula salads, organic red quinoa salad, a six-vegetable quiche on a gluten-free buckwheat crust, an avocado tartines with chickpeas, alfalfa sprouts and spicy tahini or, for breakfast, a blueberry muffin and fresh fruit. And yes, they have soy milk for coffee.
I would have taken photos but they asked me not to. I guess you'll just have to go see for yourself!
