You Look Great! Or OMG, WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR???

By Ipage @xquisite_curls
I decided to go the Big Chop route with my hair because that was the ONLY way I would commit to going natural (in other words, I'd be left with no choice BUT to go natural). I have attempted to transition from relaxed to natural twice, and I always ended up running back to the hair salon or a touch-up. Once I committed to cutting my hair, I knew I would be faced with a variety of reactions and responses. That didn't sway my decision to do it because I'm doing this for me. Nevertheless, the reactions have been interesting.
My husband loves it, surprisingly enough. I have spoken with him in length about it and he was supportive about it, but the fact that he actually likes the style on me makes me feel great :) I can honestly end this post HERE, because his opinion is really the only one that matters to me. But for the sake of being thorough and accurate about potential reactions, I shall continue.
For the most part, I have received very favorable reactions. Some people like the fact that I'm going natural this way, and others just like the style. I do have some hair-obsessed people who just CANNOT BELIEVE I would cut off my hair! Right, because obviously hair doesn't grow back *insert eye roll here*. But with people like that, just consider the source and move on. There is a woman in my neighborhood who I was friendly with, but the minute I cut my hair, she has been pretending not to know me. Whatever, I will pencil in a time to cry about that tomorrow. Another neighbor waited until we were surrounded by people in the local store to loudly exclaim, "OMG, YOU CUT OFF ALL YOUR HAIR! YOU'RE BALD NOW! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT???". No seriously, that's what she did. Completely with a look of utter disgust on her face. I never got to respond to her, because her boyfriend started talking about how he LOVED my hair and it was a good look for me. Needless to say, neighbor girl wasn't happy at that point but I just smiled and carried on with my business.
If you decided to go the Big Chop route, just be prepared for the range of reactions. The one thing that is absolutely priceless during this time is CONFIDENCE. KNOW (not "think") that you are beautiful. KNOW that you are NOT your hair! KNOW that people will only bring you down if you let them. Then go out and show them how absolutely fabulous you are. And I mean that.
