Year in Travel and Flying: 2014 in Numbers

By Thelostboylloyd @lloydthelostboy

Diligently throughout the year, the aviation geek in me recorded each flight I took, and these statistics gave me an insight on how much I flew, and somewhat, how much I traveled. But with a total of 95 flights and 83235 miles flown—enough to circumnavigate the Earth around its equator 3.3 times—I am confident that 2014 was my most well-traveled year ever. Read more…

95 – number of flight segments flown. I did fly and travel during the twelve months, with the most flights flown in October with 16.

30 – number of airports and cities abroad flown to. That includes several trips to my favorite city and island in the Philippines, Cebu and Boracay, respectively, and the 15 times I flew to and transited through Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

15 – number of new airports and cities flown to. For the first time, I was able to fly to or through the following airports and cities: Subang (SZB), Bangkok (BKK), Bangkok-Don Mueang (DMK), Kuching (KCH), Bintulu (BTU), Johor Bahru (JHB), Kota Bahru (KBR), Kuala Terengganu (TGG), Phuket (HKT), Ho Chi Minh (SGN), Nakhon Si Thammarat (NST), Surat Thani (URT), Chiang Mai (CNX), Shanghai-Pudong (PVG), and Tokyo-Narita (NRT).

16 – number of times flown to Bangkok, the most visited city. I obviously fell in love with the City of Angels, and I am happy to have discovered it thoroughly.

22 – number of trips abroad. Trips abroad may include more than one city and country. These trips filled more than half the pages in my passport!

8 – number of countries and territories visited. Aside from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, for the first time, I was able to reach Vietnam, China, Japan, and a lot of times, Thailand.

10 – number of domestic trips. Admittedly, I lagged behind the previous years, but thankfully, I was able to join Sinulog Festival (Cebu), #LaBoracay2014, and Masskara Festival (Bacolod).

21 – number of airlines flown with. I didn’t expect it to be this plenty, but I like flying with different airlines that I purposely book my tickets separately.

9 – number of new airlines flown with. I’m very pleased to have tried nine new airlines last year, including Thai Airways International, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion air, Nok Air, Firefly, Malindo Air, Tigerair, Bangkok Air, and even Kuwait Airways.

17 – number of times flown with AirAsia Zest, the airline most flown. Because of their affordable domestic and Kuala Lumpur flights, I found myself boarding their flights most.

9 – number of aircraft models flown in. I was able to explore new aircraft, such as Philippine Airlines’ Business Class on the Airbus A340-300, and take the classic Boeing 737 and 777 again.

66 – number of times flown in the Airbus 320-200, the aircraft most flown. Thanks to the many low-cost flights, I think I know how to fully operate the emergency exits of the A320.

1893 – number of miles from Manila to Tokyo-Narita, the longest flight. It was the my longest flight too, as MNL-NRT takes four hours, five minutes, while going back takes five hours.

155 – number of miles from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur, the shortest flight. A bus ride would’ve taken three hours or so, but since the fare was cheap, I flew anyway!

83235 – number of miles flown in total. Last year was clearly record-breaking among the years I’ve been flying. The figure means I’ve flown enough to equal 3.3 times the circumference of the Earth’s equator. Now, if only those miles were all credited to my frequent flyer accounts!

I wish I could have done a longer, better put-up post that details the happy moments and heartaches behind each trip, but I’m lagging behind my blog articles that I cannot wait to share with my dear readers. Eventually, most of 2014’s trips will be chronicled here, but for now, this will do. I’m surely excited for my adventures in life and love, and on the road this 2015, and I hope you’d stick around to join me. Have a great year everyone!
