Writing Challenge 29

By Brian Abbott

It’s time for this month’s writing challenge.

To spark your creativity, The Poisoned Martini features monthly images to get you started.  Such images, because of their visual nature, vividly speak to writers and spark ideas for writing.  The idea is to view the image below and to write a scene, a short story, a chapter, a novella, or maybe even a novel.

Last month’s image featured an elegant mansion on a hill in Syracuse.  Overlooking Walnut Park near Syracuse University, this stately house has served as a residence for the University’s chancellors since 1915.  The twenty room house, made of Indiana limestone with red and black brick trimming, was built in 1901, and formerly, it belonged to the Nottingham family.  View the image, taken in 2008, here.

For this month’s challenge, perhaps you will take a step back in time.  Or are you very much still in the present?  Where might these structures be, and what could be their purpose?
