Words on Wednesdays: French Retirement Age

By Johntalbott

A recent letter to the Editor of the Wall Street Journal by Dick Bagby of Virginia Beach entitled "I was Wrong About Parisian Cafe Society" is worth sharing:

"Regarding your editorial "Hollande's First Step Backward" (June 7): Wow, was I surprised to read that France's newly elected Socialist President François Hollande was lowering the retirement age in France to 60 from 62.

On my last visit to Paris, after seeing so many able-bodied Parisians sitting in bistros, reading novels and sipping aperitifs, I had assumed the retirement age was 38."
