Because we're busy and important.
Our time is precious, and in order to ensure we make time for the important things, we schedule.
We schedule our girls night outs, play dates, date night, meetings, oil changes, and baby deliveries.
There really isn't … Wait. Wha?!
Yes people, the new trend happening now is scheduled births. Not only are moms and moms to be scheduling c-sections, they're also scheduling inductions. Now I get it, there are complications, you're worried about the babies' or the moms' health, but no.
Instead of due dates, women are being given delivery dates. Women are scheduling the birth of their children way before they even know the gender, just for convenience. We're now scheduling births for what I find to be no medical reason at all.
Reasons Like:
I don't want the birthday to be on a holiday;
I want to space the birthday out from my other child's birthday;
I have obligations at work and want to be back from maternity leave at a certain time
I don't want to miss our planned vacation trip/event
Sadly, the list goes on.
Seriously, whatever happened to nature? Don't get me wrong, its not like I wasn't ready to hand out eviction notices when I got close to my due date, but I wasn't ready to preempt the natural process either.
Funny thing. My OB was more eager for my delivery than I was. Two weeks away from my due date he was pushing a c-section, which was totally out of the question for me.
His rationale?
(In male authoritative voice) Well your pelvis is narrow and I'm concerned that you won't be able to push since the baby is measuring 7-8lbs.
For a first time mom, that totally sounds scary and enough to just freak you out.
So wait, all of a sudden now, I can't even try to give birth? So you're the deciderer now?
I don't think so.
I may be a new mama but I ain't no punk.
Less than a week after my OB visit, I went into labor and with the help of an epidural gave birth to my 6lb 60z baby boy.
Now, I'm not saying that c-sections or inductions are BAD, because they're not. They serve their purpose and help keep babies and moms safe in the event of complicated or high risk pregnancies or births. So let's use them for their intended purpose, not to keep our schedules in tact.
Our calendars allow us to reschedule, cancel, or simply be tentative for a reason. We're not supposed to be at every meeting, presentation, conference, or event. And really, what could you be missing when you're in the middle of this?
Have we gotten so far away from appreciating the birthing process that we can't wait for labor? I want to know what you think.
