Microsoft announced it's latest version of Windows will be a free upgrade to almost everyone but people are confused over this because of the recent 'free-for-all' insider build and then it was not the case but then it still it kind of is. Let me not confuse you any more, let's get into Windows 10 upgrade brigade.

Windows 10 Free Upgrade Explained

DO I GET FREE WINDOWS 10 UPGRADE?

Short Answer : Mostly yes.

Long Easy Answer :
Running genuine copy of Windows 7.
Yes you'll get free Windows 10 Upgrade.

Running genuine copy of Windows 8/8.1.
Yes you'll get free Windows 10 Upgrade.

Running genuine copy of Windows Vista or XP.
No you'll not get a free Windows 10 Upgrade.

Running pirated copy of Windows.
No you'll not get a free Windows 10 Upgrade.

For cases in which you won't get a free Windows 10 Upgrade you'll need to buy a Windows 10 license for $119.99 or $199.99 for Home or Pro respectively.

So you aren't getting a free Windows 10 Upgrade for some reason and still want a free copy? It is kind of possible still.
Microsoft runs a Windows Insider Program which let's anyone test Windows 10 as they develop. This also means everything that they are testing will be pushed as an upgrade. Being said that if you sign up for Windows Insider Program you can install Windows 10 and use it for free, even after Windows 10 is launched, as long as you are Upcoming changes to Windows 10 Insider Preview builds and keep upgrading the test builds as pushed by Microsoft. These test builds expire soon and new builds are automatically installed as they become available.
