Prince William and Kate Middleton: First wedding anniversary

On 29 April 2011, hundreds of millions of people around the world watched Prince William and Kate Middleton tie the knot. According to The Telegraph, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are planning to pass the day privately this year, possibly at Balmoral.

So what has the first year of marriage brought the Royal couple? Pregnancy rumours, gun scandals and puppies, it seems.

The wedding. “All in all, it looked like a success,” was The Periscope Post’s verdict on the day that introduced Pippa Middleton, AKA Her Royal Hotness, to the world, thanks to her derriere-hugging bridesmaid dress. Thirty-three million people in Britain watched as the wedding dress was finally revealed – a Sarah Burton-designed homage to Grace Kelly – and K-Mid became the Duchess of Cambridge. And despite fears in the run-up to the big day, there was nary an anarchist in sight to disrupt proceedings, although Princess Beatrice did wear a very distracting hat.

The puppy. In February, there was a new addition to the Royal Family, after Wills and Kate got a cocker spaniel. “And we all know, don’t we, what that’s preparation for… Royal babies!” said The Periscope Post.

The pregnancy rumours. The ring was barely on K-Mid’s finger when the pregnancy rumours began to circulate. In November, news that the Duchess of Cambridge had refused peanuts on a trip to Copenhagen set tongues wagging. And in March, anonymous sources suggested the Royal couple were starting phase one of Operation Baby. It turned out they were just skiing.

The embarrassing relatives. “Pippa Middleton, AKA Her Royal Hotness, has been snapped in an Audi convertible with a man apparently wielding a gun, the day after she attended a ‘wild’ Paris party,” said The Periscope Post, pointing out that the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister was unlikely to face charges. By contrast, Royal rebel Prince Harry managed not to embarrass his older brother during his tour of the Caribbean, instead winning over hearts and minds as he “beat” Usain Bolt in a race and bust some reggae moves on stage.

The public appearances. The Duchess of Cambridge overcame nerves to deliver her first public speech. But, as The Periscope Post noted, most commentators were more interested in the fact that K-Mid appeared to have borrowed her outfit from her mother. Prince William was not there to see his wife perform, as he was carrying out a controversial tour of duty in the Falklands.
