You might have spotted from a couple of previous recipes that I recently upgraded my food processor to a Vitamix. I often hear the words “game changer” thrown around, but this is probably the first time I’ve been compelled to use it to describe something myself.

My Vitamix has been a game changer in my kitchen and opened up all kinds of experiments that I couldn’t have done before.

One such experiment is making homemade milk. I’ve had a bag of whole hemp seeds tucked away in my cupboard for a while now, but have felt a bit stuck about what to use them for. Let me tell you now, using them in place of hemp hearts in these Cherry & Hemp Brownies did not go well (I’d highly recommend whipping up a batch of those brownies next time you have any hemp hearts to hand though!). Therefore, hemp milk was the natural choice for my first foray into homemade milk – I could finally put these seeds to good use and take  full advantage of their nutty flavor.

To make this whole seed hemp milk, you will need two pieces of equipment:

  • Nut milk bag – I sifted through Amazon reviews and chose one that was well-rated and it only cost me around £6
  • A high-powered blender – I used my Vitamix S30, so if you’re using a different model then you may need a longer processing time

Whole hemp seeds tend to be a lot cheaper than hemp hearts so they’re perfect for making hemp milk with. Although the whole seeds have a hard shell, there’s still no need to soak them first – in fact, there’s no legwork to do prior to making this recipe at all!

I’ve gently flavoured this whole seed hemp milk with vanilla bean paste, but if you want a sweeter version you could add a little agave or maple syrup as well. Within seconds the blender cracks the seeds open, releasing all of the nutrients inside, and the water turns milky. It’s so easy to then remove the husks by filtering through a nut milk bag or piece of muslin cloth. The whole hemp seed milk keeps well stored in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days.

This homemade whole seed hemp milk is perfect for using on cereal, with turmeric added for a nourishing drink or to be used in cooking. It’s not great in hot drinks as it does curdle quite a bit – however, if you can handle the appearance, it does still taste absolutely fine added to coffee (I have yet to try it in tea).

  • 30g whole hemp seeds
  • 250ml water
  • ¼tsp vanilla bean paste
Method
  1. Add all of the ingredients to a high-powered blender and blend for around 30 seconds to a minute. It should have turned into a milk liquid, with no visible husks.
  2. Place the nut milk bag over a large bowl and pour in the milk from the blender. Squeeze the bag to force the milk into the bowl, leaving behind the husks in the bag. It may be necessary to do this in batches, but you shouldn't need to empty out the nut milk bag until the end.
  3. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge. It will keep for around three days.
