Scotland is an ideal destination for a short break. There is a huge amount of outdoor fun as well as great places to eat and drink in and some top places for staying in too. Here are some suggestions for places to stay which also serve good food.
Ayrshire has been a great escape place for us over the years. It’s easy to get to by car and public transport, has rolling hills as well as the stunning Culzean Castle. Two of our favorite places to stay are The Hollies in Prestwick. This B&B offers delicious homemade food, peaceful surroundings but yet is just off the bustling Main Street of Prestwick with it’s shops, bars and restaurants as well as a ten minute walk from the beautiful sandy beach.

Our other Ayrshire favorite is The Old School Dalleagles B&B. This is an excellent B&B situated in the countryside so ideal for peace and quiet. There are chickens and geese on site for eggs and entertainment. Friendly hosts, filling breakfast and five star accommodation in our view.

In the Oban area we love Loch Melfort Hotel. With it’s stunning views over the Argyll Coast as well as the beautiful Arduaine Garden on its doorstep. Delicious food and everything you could ever need in your room – including binoculars!

More luxury can be found at Mar Hall, just on Glasgow’s doorstep this five star hotel and spa will make you think you really aren’t a few miles outside Scotland’s largest city. The golf course, spa, restaurant food and large bedrooms make it a most comfortable stay.

Further North is Ballathie House Hotel in Stanley, Perthshire. Stanley has some lovely old mills to visit as well as the landscape for some good walks. This as well as being within traveling distance of Pitlochry/Perth etc make Ballathie a good base. Try and get one of the turreted rooms as the bath is immense and the turret area is quirky. Excellent food, service and rooms here.

Near to Loch Lomond in the town of Balloch is the Tullie Inn. This bar, restaurant and rooms have been recently given a makeover and certainly look the part now. With a good selection of beers and wines as well as themed menus, you won’t starve here. Loch Lomond Shores is nearby with their farmers markets, shops and activities to keep everyone happy.

Last but not least, The Elphinstone in Biggar is located on a busy high street with shops, cafés, a puppet theatre and even a gasworks museum within walking distance. After all these things to do head to The Elphinstone for solid cooking. Excellent steaks, desserts and bar for relaxing in. The rooms are peaceful and well looked after.
