Where to Eat Clean – the Living Cafe

By Dariel

This is one of the most convenient cafe that we ever been to so far – it is located just right outside of Sixth Avenue MRT station! Initially, we were still afraid of not being able to locate the café but guessed there was no need to fear anymore.

The Living Café is a 2-storey café dealing with anything with health and about health. Why do we say that? This is because the 1st storey is a café serving delicious organic meals. These are completely natural meaning you wouldn’t find preservatives, artificial flavourings/colourings, red meat, white sugars and cow dairy. They even have gluten-free options as well to cater for people who are allergic to gluten.

As we entered the café, it does not feel claustrophobic like in some cafes. It felt spacious because it has high ceiling due to its 2nd storey organic retail store and the seats and tables were well-spaced out. It has that rustic feel with bits of greenery, wooden irregular furniture, chalkboard writings with bits of items you will see off a farm….it has that “clean” feeling unlike the regular café you been to.

Enough of café intro, let’s get on with the food. We tried 2 mains and 2 drinks. First is the Breakfast Buritto.

The Breakfast Buritto has a very colourful presentation and this is due to the different types of goodies stuffed in it. It’s got scrambled eggs, raw eggplant bacon, spinach, mushroom ragout, Mexican sauce, sweet & chili sauce and raw cashew mayo with spring onions sprinkled on it. Along the side are the cherry tomatoes. You would take the buritto with your hand and give it good bite. All the goodness – the smooth egg, the spinach crunch, the chewy mushroom, the sweet-salty raw eggplant bacon and sauces all together making the stuffing so juicy-ly good. The buritto though tasted light but it was still filling.

Next is the Spiced Chicken. This is a chicken burger served up with sweet potato wedges and coleslaw. Presentation wise nothing much to describe about but what matters most is how well it tasted. Naturally, we go for the sweet potato wedges. Picked one and gave a small bite, the taste was familiar. It was lightly seasoned with spices that you would normally tasted it in Indian dishes. Unique. Next was the burger. Like the buritto we had earlier, the burger was juicy too. With both hands squeezing the burger and taking a big bite, the juice from the tomato, egg, lettuce, the aioli and the raw cashew mayo together with the most chicken patty were what’s making this whole burger easy to eat. Pairing up with occasional light sour taste of the coleslaw, this burger is light and refreshing.

The Coffee and Mocha we ordered were special. Instead of the usual milk from cows were used, The Living Café uses soy milk. The difference is that the end product of the coffee and mocha is not too heavy and more soothing on the stomach. To those who are used to the cow’s milk coffee, this coffee makes take few sips before getting used to it. I did (as a hardcore coffee drinker) and so can you. The coffee is light with caffeine taste in the beginning as you sip into your mouth and ending with a fade of soy milk taste.

Besides these mains, there are cakes available. Just pop over to the counter for their cake selection. On the 2nd storey is the organic retail store selling organic items. They have quite a bit of things there so you may want to check out their wares during your time at the café. Besides organic items, they even have programs organized now and then so be sure to check with them for upcoming events if not there are also event notices on the table to look out for.

The Living Café, in our opinion, is a great place if you want to sit down and have a quiet time to chat with your friends and family over a simple yet filling organic meal. The foods were delicious, light and filling. On the drinks side, the coffee may take you some time to get used because of the soy milk but end of the day, it will still be coffee more gentle on the stomach.

Best of all, it’s just right next to Sixth Avenue MRT station! Now even rain cannot stop you from eating organic food!
