When Kombucha Goes Bad

By Lindsayleighbentley @lindsayLbentley

Well, bad news and good news!

The bad news is, my current kombucha brew grew mold.

The good news is, I now have a great way of showing you exactly what it looks like for kombucha to go wrong!

I recently wrote a step-by-step guide for how to brew your own kombucha, as well as pictures of a healthy brew in process; but I felt that the only thing missing was a picture of what happens when it hasn’t gone well.

So, here it is, in all it’s gross glory:

Moldy Kombucha Final

In contrast, here is the other brew that I started the same day (I have no idea why one did fine and the other molded).

Such is the nature of yeast and bacteria cultures!

I’ll unfortunately have to dump the entire contents of the moldy batch.  Then, I’ll wash the jar with very hot water, soap, and a good vinegar rinse to be sure that whatever got in there, or has grown in there since, is gone for good.

I hope my failure will help put your mind at ease when brewing your own!

Really, this is pretty much the only thing that can go wrong with it!

Have you tried brewing your own yet?

live well. be well.
