What to Wear This Autumn for Comfort and Style

Autumn in Australia is a beautiful mishmash of colourful petals cascading from crimson, green and gold trees, and I think our wardrobe should reflect the beauty of our seasons.

We are two seasons away from the northern hemisphere, but it doesn’t mean our style lags the seasons.

Here are my five rules for comfort and style this autumn.

Aim for style – but never sacrifice comfort. Unless you’re going to an awards ceremony.
It’s never okay to head outside in tracksuit pants, or gym gear (unless you’re heading to or from the gym!). But teetering in tiptoe heels that showcase your discomfort, or wearing something uber-tight in which you feel totally self conscious, are also no-to-rarely-go zones. If you’re not comfortable, it tends to show. Balance this by taking the comfort vs style test: if you can rate your comfort on a 3 or 4 out of 5, and your style the same, go for it.

Balance basics with a splash of color.
Good-quality basics are wardrobe staples. Pair nice, well-fitting black pants or a skirt with a shimmery gold or red top for an evening out. For day wear, blue or black jeans with a splash of color on top balances out the look with your own flair.

Accessories are everything.
A colourful pair of dangly earrings with an up-swept hair-do, or a patterned silk scarf on a black dress adds the uniqueness that will keep you feeling comfortable, and yet standing out from the crowd.

Buy quality pieces you can take from day to night.
How often do we separate our working wardrobes from social? I love finding pieces that are elegant and conservative enough to wear at the office, yet I can commandeer the look to take it into the evening with a simple adjustment, such as swinging earrings, a sparkly top change, or higher heels.

Moving into cooler weather doesn’t need to be boring – mix it up with stylish features while keeping your cool in comfort.
