RL: “We got rid of welfare in 1995.”

When I read this, I wondered how this could have gone on for twenty years without me noticing. So I did a quick Dogpile search and discovered that in 1995 most welfare programs were handed off to the states. So we aren’t “rid of” welfare, it’s just organized differently…

…I think they’d fuck up less if they worked for a living.

They are time limited. It is called TANF, it is limited to 5 years, and the payments are very low. It has been handed off to the states, but payments are limited to 5 years, and most states have set payments very low, like $300/month.

Ok you force single Moms to work. Now who is going to take care of their kids? There’s no welfare in Latin America, and single Moms are everywhere. They all have to work. Latin America works great huh?

Welfare is very common in Europe, and many women on welfare do not work. The problems from European welfare are zero. How come welfare causes no problems in Europe?

Conservatives and many other fools have been blaming welfare for all manner of ills that it obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with. Now that welfare is pretty much history, women get cut off after 5 years, and indeed, most women on welfare have to work or starve, how many of the problems related to welfare have been solved or even gotten better?

Zero percent.

There has been zero percent improvement in former welfare mothers now on TANF and forced to sink or swim. In fact, a lot of data suggests that they are doing worse now that they were on old welfare.
